It's Not Just The Rich
In response to the usual in this op-ed column by Paul Krugman in the Chronicle, I sent the following letter:
re: Anger is sweeping American rich
Once again, Paul Krugman shows his contempt for private property and individual liberty, in typical manner focusing his derision on the "rich", who "feel that things to which they are entitled are being taken away".
I would submit that instead, it is Krugman and his acolytes who are engaging in a "belligerent sense of entitlement" — the entitlement of the government towards the property of others, that he and politicians have more of a right to someone's property than does the person who earned it himself. Note to Dr. Krugman: it isn't your money, nor does it belong to the government.
No one is suggesting, as Krugman implies, that no one should pay any taxes at all; however, the government is asking for more and more money — money that could be used for savings, investments, or consumption. Instead, Dr. Krugman believes that politicians in Washington know best how to spend it.
It isn't just the "rich" that are getting bewildered and, yes, angry over the ever-expanding federal government that seeks more of our property and imposes more mandates at the expense of individual liberty. These impositions are on every taxpayer and citizen, not just those earning above $200,000.
Sincerely,
Dave Smith
